Le code international de nomenclature impose lors de la description d'une nouvelle espèce botanique de lui adjoindre un spécimen type , c'est-à-dire une part d'herbier qui sera la référence pour cette nouvelle espèce. Nos herbiers regorgent ainsi de milliers de références fondamentales pour les botanistes systématiciens du monde entier qui ont besoin de s'y référer pour tout travail de recherche.
